Startup Challenge 2: Creating a Quick and Easy Corporate ID Posted: 21 Oct 2013 05:00 PM PDT Which Marketplace items are most helpful to a startup that needs a quick solution for its branding, brochures and logo? That's the second of four challenges we've put to our authors. Read on to explore some collections of essential items—handpicked by GraphicRiver authors—that are essential for any startup working on their corporate ID. In this four-part series, we've given them some scenarios that a typical startup is likely to face, and asked them recommend the items that would be most helpful. Here's our second one… Ralf and Rita have been caring for canines for a decade. They've been running a successful dog boarding facility near their home, and after getting advice from a local businessman who uses their facility, they decided to fulfill a long-term dream and expand. They'll start with a small chain of three animal boarding services, and need to rethink their branding and brochures. They'll need a logo that fits their new name ("Doggy Daycare"), and a print menu of their services, including available kennel sizes, length of stay, a list of meals, and add-on services including dog walking and grooming Two authors took up the challenge, and put together some great collections to help the Doggy Daycare guys. Here they are, along with my favorite items from each collection. Joanne Taylor (Joiaco)“My initial thoughts were around the fact that ‘pets are people’ are part of extended families, so a business that is related to pet care should have similar attractions to one that appeals to people. My keywords were ‘dog care’, ‘dog love’, ‘happy dog’, ‘love dogs’ and ‘healthy dog’. “I chose to concentrate on a ‘lovable’ and ‘cute’ appeal, and searched the portfolios of some of my favourite authors’ illustration styles. There is not a whole lot available in the way of specific flyers, but the ones that are available seem to do the job perfectly. I chose a couple of neat and simple, economical to produce, items.” Pet Care Flyer / Magazine Ad by ingridk Cute Dog Colorful Buttons by lordalea Pets Care Business Card by ColorPo1nt Pet Services Flyer by Designcrew View the full collection here. Ghost Adventures: Inside The Philippines’ Most Haunted Building Posted: 20 Oct 2013 10:03 PM PDT We recently hand picked thirteen of the creepiest files on VideoHive. One of our spookiest finds came from author GraphicoFX. We caught up with him about the making of this After Effects opener, Abandoned v2 – Ghost Adventures, including exclusive behind the scenes photos from the shoot. Check it out.
Clark Air Base has a long, turbulent, and often bloody history. Many died there during the Second World War, and wounded American soldiers were evacuated from the base during the Vietnam War. The deaths and traumas from those conflicts have left their mark on the spirit presence in the hospital. There are a number of reminders of the base’s bloody past, and those locations are some of the most haunted in the Philippines. In 1960, the US Air Force began construction of a new modern Regional Medical Facility at Clark (now known as the abandoned hospital). It had 200 beds, and was completed in April 1964 at a cost of $4.5 million. It was closed after the US withdrawal. The hospital was looted, and is now just a gutted out shell. A portion of the base became the DMIA Airport, commonly thought of as Manila's second airport. Clark Air Base and Hospital, the Home Plate canteen and museum experienced major bombing from the Japanese during the war. One air raid reportedly happened during Christmas of 1941, causing the death of many merrymakers inside the Home Plate Canteen. The souls apparently have not lost their party spirit, as early morning joggers have reported hearing party music and excited talk coming from inside, even when the building is obviously empty. Other paranormal activities have been reported in the abandoned hospital, where apparitions and mysterious voices are common occurrences. Violent spirits witnessed by the inhabitants have rendered the area off limits to everyone. In Clark Museum, the ghost of a serviceman who committed suicide still haunts the place where he hanged himself. The base hospital, now in ruins, sees the most spirit activity. Screams are often heard, as are dancing orbs of light. Voices in the empty building are also often heard, and there have been countless reports of apparitions being seen walking or floating through the building, most bearing the scars of battle. Several unidentified white forms have also been observed floating across the airstrip. Objects have often been "thrown" at visitors, making them aware that their presence is unwelcome, in no uncertain terms. The hospital was said to be haunted even while it was open and operational. Many employees heard doors opening and closing on their own, and saw unexplained people standing nearby who simply vanished.
Early on the morning of November 6, 2012, my friend Mike and I decided to visit the hospital. Unfortunately, when we were about 100 metres away, a security guard stopped us and asked if we have a permit to enter. We didn’t, and were not allowed to enter the vicinity. The building has been off limits to the public for several years, because many have reported extraordinary experiences while inside, and others were injured. But I was determined to get inside, so we went to the local government office and got permission. We went back, and the security guard assisted us while we took some footage.
I never expected to experience such spooky feelings, because personally I do not believe in the spirits of the dead appearing or haunting people. I just wanted was to get some spooky footage that would fit my template. I wasn’t disappointed, because I got some great shots. As we entered the different sections, a mixed feeling of excitement and enchantment struck us. I began to imagine the deaths and sufferings of the people who were celebrating Christmas in 1941. The feeling became intense as we approached the morgue, since it's located underground in a cool atmosphere and dark surroundings. Light only passes in through a few holes. We were able to capture only a small amount of footage, because we were stopped by the sound of murmurings and drops of water. We immediately vacated the enchanted area, and took some more footage at the front of the abandoned hospital.
I used a Canon 60D, 650D and 500D with 17-55mm and 35mm lenses, and for my settings I used a flat picture style (user def) for both the video and photo shoot, because the key is post-process. Most of the footage was hand-held shots, and I purposely used this technique because I wanted to make the video look natural, and quite shaky. Some of our shots are really shaky, but I managed to reduce it in After Effects using the Warp Stabilized feature on CS6 (also available in CS5.5). The big feature of this project is the motion tracking. I really like to see the text, objects, photos and videos tracked in the real footage, so they look like they belong in the shots. In some of the scenes, I used the built-in 3D Camera Tracker of CS6, and for other scenes I used Mocha. The entire project was done in CS6, but I saved it back to CS5 for the template, because not everyone is using CS6 or CS5.5. Some inexperienced buyers might have asked how to save CS6 files back to CS5. Check out this link for detailed information.
I have Version 1 of Abandoned (though it's not available on Videohive). I also have “The Mysterious Lady at Crisologo Museum”, an experimental short spooky video with my pretty wife characterizing the lady in "the grudge". We took the footage in the old museum during our vacation at Vigan City, Philippines, and were spooked (as if someone passed by between us) during the shoot. I'm currently working a new spooky item, and maybe I’ll call it "Abandoned v3". I hope to finish it before November.
Halloween is a big deal to Filipinos. Those who are work far from home go back to be with their family. It’s a time to commemorate loved ones who have passed away. People often travel for a day or two to attend halloween parties and cemeteries. They busily prepare for November 1st and 2nd, which are called All Saints Day and All Souls Day respectively. The memorial parks and other public cemeteries all over the country are saturated by people visiting the graves of their loved ones. Long lines of vehicles on the road cause traffic jams, and the highway patrol are on a 24-hour duty to manage the traffic. Public cemeteries and memorial parks are full of busy people selling flowers, candles, food and drinks. Visiting Cemeteries and Memorial Parks You see people bringing tools to clean the graves of their dead relatives. Honestly, most of them only visit the tomb of their loved ones once a year at Halloween, so they have a lot to do. They clean the tomb, repaint it, and make a shelter to stay in on All Souls Day. They put up tents beside the grave, and place benches around it in preparation for the wake on the night of November 1st. All members of the family—especially the men—are there to do the work. Buying Candles and Flowers Candles are a very important part of the celebration. Most people buy candles to put on the graves. The vendors make a lot of money. You can see them along the road and at the entrance of the cemetery selling different kinds and colors of candles. Many people buy them. I have no idea about the significance of the candles, but I understand they are a special offering to the dead. Besides candles, there are bouquets of flowers. People always bring fresh flowers to the grave. Again the vendors have a great opportunity to make money by selling different styles of bouquets at different prices. The celebration would not be complete without the beautiful flower offering at the tomb. It’s their way of showing love. Food Preparation On November 1st, while the men and the other members of the family are preparing and cleaning the graveyard, the mothers and daughters are busy preparing the food. It’s a big festivity because relatives from everywhere are visiting, and they have to prepare extra food. They mainly cook native delicacies like puto, suman and biko, along with other recipes like beef steak, fried chicken, pasta and rice. They also prepare drinks. It’s a huge celebration for the whole family. Parties This is the most awaited part of the celebration. On the night of November 1st, the party begins at the cemetery. All the family members will be there, along with other relatives. They host the party in the tents and shelters they have made. They play music—some bring music players, others bring musical instruments. They play games like Scrabble, talk and have fellowship with their relatives, whom they only see once a year on this occasion. The cemetery is full of fun on Halloween night. Police Surveillance There is police surveillance all around the vicinity to maintain peace and order. With so many people (some drunk), unwanted circumstances could happen, so 24-hour security measures are provided for everyone’s safety. Some people go home at early dawn, but others stay until morning, so the police authorities also stay with them. This is how the Filipinos celebrate Halloween. It is a special holiday, with great reunions and fun activities. |
